How to test your blood sugar at home

Watch a full step-by-step demonstration of a real at-home test with the Contour Next GEN meter, then follow the steps below. You'll need: a glucose monitor, test strips for your meter, a lancing device and fresh lancets.

1

Wash and dry

Wash your hands with soap and warm water, then dry fully. Residue on your fingers can skew the reading.

2

Load a fresh lancet

Put a new sterile lancet in your lancing device and set a shallow depth to start.

3

Insert the strip

Slide a test strip into the meter — most meters switch on automatically.

4

Prick the side

Press the device against the side of a fingertip (not the pad) and release. Rotate fingers each time.

5

Apply the blood

Touch the strip's edge to the blood drop. The strip draws it in — don't smear or add a second drop.

6

Read and record

Your result appears in seconds. Note it with the date and time, and dispose of the lancet safely.
